Maharashtra Bandh: Hooligans Vandalised BEST Buses, Shops Shut Across State

Mumbai: In a bid to protest against the Lakhmipur Kheri incident which claimed eight lives including four farmers, the Maharastra government on Monday has called for a statewide bandh.

However, during the band, the sale of essential commodities has been allowed. The ruling alliance of NCP, Congress and Shiv Sena, Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) on Saturday said that the bandh has been called to show that our state is with the farmers of the country.

''Our party will participate in full force in Maharashtra's bandh on October 11 to protest the killing of farmers in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri,'' Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Saturday had said on Saturday.

Slamming the ruling government over the bandh Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has termed the statewide bandh call as a hoax. He said that the government is getting it done with the help of the police.

''After the Maha Vikas Aghadi government came to power, two thousand farmers have committed suicide in Maharashtra so far,'' Fadnavis added.

Raj Thackeray's party Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) also opposed the Maharashtra bandh. MNS leader Ameya Khopkar said that the government should have given one day's salary to these farmers or should have worked overtime instead.

''It is not right to harass citizens as people are already hurt by the lockdown,'' he added.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) has claimed that since late night, nine of their buses have been damaged in different parts of the city.

According to a statement issued by BEST, the protesters vandalized nine buses, including one hired on lease, near Dharavi, Mankhurd, Shivaji Nagar, Charkop, Oshiwara, Deonar and Inorbit Mall early in the morning.
